Meaning of Sisu
I am fortunate in that I have gotten to know many Finns over the years and experienced good and bad situations with them.Sisu is in simple terms”Never giving up,a lasting endurance in the face of adversity,courage and perseverance.Probably the greatest example of Sisu was in the Finnish Winter War of 1939 ,when Russia accumulated a force of over 400 000 men and attacked Finland,with the intention of conquering the country.Finland lined up a force of all the country could muster,numbering some 100 000 and bravely fought and with held the Russian onslaught.This demanded the Finns to dig deep down within themselves and find the energy and endurance to fight on in the face of death.
Sisu dictates there is no Failing
I was informed early on arriving in Helsinki Finland;if things do not go as planned you do not throw a fit and blame others.You quietly say,gather your strength and try again.It has often crossed my mind that living in such extreme weather has a large part to play in the inbuilt nature of Finns.Living in temperatures that drop to well below –20C in Winter Time has to give a person some sense of endurance and will power.It is this courage to accept your surrounding situation with dignity and a silent determination to overcome the problem and your personal weaknesses.This is Sisu.Mikä Hakkinen talks a bit about driving and Sisu
Sisu From Childhood
From an early age the spirit is imbued in to children from their mothers and fathers,generation to generation.Finnish Friends say I have found it:I guess I have.If I can walk home 20 Km in freezing conditions through forest,at 0200 in the night,loose a boot and still get home.I can say.Yes I believe I found Sisu.There were times when I felt to just crawl under a tree and fall to sleep,but I knew that would end in disaster.You just have to keep going forward till you find a road or see lights.
There is a lot to be said for Sisu.It is inherent in every Finnish Person and some of it rubs off on Expatriates who live in Finland and among the Finns long enough.Hyvää Sisu
