Lapland Gold to be Panned for
[wpp keyword="gold" limit_page="3"]
There are a small but ever growing group of people travelling to Ivalo,Northern Lapland each and every year in search of the mother load of Gold that can be found in the sediment of the Ivalojoki.Whilst big companies backed with geologists, diamond drills and latest trilling techniques have found some 30 Gold deposits in and around Central Lapland
The actual Gold Deposits led to mining in the areas of Saattopora,Kittila and Pahtavaara in Sodankylä.However for all the 7.6 million tons of ore that was mined and sifted through, only 10,800Kg of Gold was retrieved in the years between 1988-2000
Lapland still the silent way for Gold Diggers & Backpackers
The few people who still venture up to Northern Lapland in search of a parent rock or better still an unending source of Gold breads a special kind of person.Often spending the summer months digging and panning for Gold. The most popular of places is along the banks of the Ivalojoki valley.Gold has been found on many occasions. The first Gold rush began in 1870.A steady stream of Gold Diggers could be seen wandering North, ready to rough it out in the wild, all in the hope of finding a few nice nuggets of Gold.My feeling is that it was not so much for the money in the old days as for being able to place a gold ring on the fiancées finger
Since the first Gold rush about 140 years ago the total production of Gold amounts to about 2000 Kilos. It begs the question, whether it is a small amount or a lot?
When the Gold rush subsided only the more dedicated ventured to Lapland in search of the precious metal. These hermits dug and panned and became part of the colorful history of Lapland. The biggest known nugget of Gold found in Lapland came in at a weight of 380.9 grams. The truly beautiful thing is,that many smaller nuggets of gold have been found over the years by both professionals and amateurs. It is also known that Lapland Gold is amongst the purest in the world!
E-75 road of Gold
The E-75 road that runs from Vuotso Ivalo was found when under construction to be literally paved with gold. This fact is due to the rock and sand used to construct the road contained high gold deposits and trace elements.Today the largest gold producing area in Northern Finland is actually close to the Norwegian/Finland border at Suurkuusikko,
Experts say there is still large quantities of Lapland Gold to be found,so if you feel like going back to Klondyke and panning away for a few months this summer leave a message should you find the mother load.

Makes me want to wander north! :) 380.9 grams is a huge gold nugget! I didn't think you could find nuggets of that size in this area of the world.
