The latest figures of Finland show a healthy if smallish population.Approximately 5.500.000 people reside in Finland and of those 550,000 live in Helsinki.The country itself is 391,000 sq kilometers compared to the 249,000 of the UK.As you can see there is a lot of space and very few inhabitants.

There are approximately 191,000 foreigners that reside throughout the country,though a larger proportion live in and around Helsinki,Vantaa and Espoo.
The most obvious points to notice are the amount of lakes that are spread throughout the country and that the majority of housing is built below tree height.The lakes themselves are World famous,with the Finnish 1000 lakes rally being the high light.
So my first impressions were of a super clean country with vast amounts of Forrest and inland waterways.(lakes)The nest thing I/we had to was register as I was a foreigner in a non-Eu country.This at the time presented l0ads of difficulties.I remember then the foreighn office department was aptly named the Aliens office.The only thing I could do,was to laugh.Then a person entering Finland would only be allowed to stay on a visitors permit for 3 months.
Myself and Tuija thought about this for the next few weeks;We decided to get married and on the 28 December 1988 we were married in Helsinki,Finland.This at first seemed to be the way out,however it still took some 4 weeks and a lot of tears on my wifes part to get the foreign office to grant me a residents and work permit.So I was allowed to stay and seek some sort of work,which with the help of Tuija`s friend I secured myself a job in Helsinki,Finland and there is ample lakes and forest
