Some Facts To Living Abroad
I have posted recently on subjects such as living abroad,is moving abroad right for you and fact finding in the country you wish to move to.I left England in 1988 for love and secondly to travel and see places. My girlfriend then and now my wife who I love dearly was as surprised as I was that I actually turned up on her door four days later.I had no idea that I would eventually settle and Live in Finland
I have now been living abroad in Finland as a British Expatriate for 21 years and I would not change anything that has been or is likely to face me in the future.
Traveling and living Abroad,be open-minded
As opposed to what the right way should have been:Visiting the country first, arranging work and learning some of the Finnish Language,I chose for personal reasons to just get on a Ship from Harwich,UK and head for Sweden.I have alway`s been a traveler and ended up in some nice places and some not so nice places.I have been in the company of some decent, honest people and some not so trustworthy people.I am often accused of being too Blue-eyed.One thing I have learnt though is to be aware of the situations and people around me if they are strangers. Some friends and family may accuse me of being mad or just plain stupid.
Well,I have a belief that what goes around, comes around. What I have learned is that my station in life was not to make money.I truly would not know what to do with it if I had it.If I see some one in need,I feel it only right to try to help.It can be the smallest things that actually cost me little, but can cheer up the heart of the receiver. If some one needs to just talk about a problem he or she has,the least I can do is to listen. If some one on the street is suffering from a really bad hangover and is nearly incapable of walking,I can go to the shop for them or buy them a small bottle of spirits to take the edge off their hangover.
What goes around, comes around When Living Abroad
I still today see the same Finnish People that I without thinking helped, most have become good friends or Brothers if you like.My integration in to the Finnish society ad culture has taken me the best part of my life in Finland. Those very same people I once gave a helping hand to,now invite me to their homes and sauna`s.As a result I got to know more of the Finish language, their customs and some of their traditions.I can say with an open heart that I have gotten back far more than I gave away. Some readers may not understand my way of thinking, but try it and you will not go far wrong in whatever country you decide to move to.
A long time ago I cot acquainted with a Finnish man sitting on the street. He was homeless and dirty, his mind seemed to be totally lost.I escrted him to where he needed to go and it turned out to be a Bikers club house. My first instinct was to say farewell to him,but he insisted I come in to the club house and take a drink with him.I eventually agreed, not being sure if this was such a good idea.
I trod carefully to avoid knocking over the many motorcycles parked inside for the Finnish Winter. We got to the bar they had constructed in the large garage and began drinking pontica(82% spirit)with water. As the day progressed 4 then 10 more club members turned up.This was the time I believed it time to sling my hook and head on home. However I was made welcome and conversation became alive. It Turned out the Biker who had bought me to the club house, was the same man some years earlier who I had helped with buying him a small bottle of spirits. He swore that he would never forget and that he never did.
Finns are true to their word
I found early on living abroad, that when Finnish People give their word,he or she really does mean it.It is an honour for Finnish People to keep their word and their memories are like elephants. If they say they want to be your friend, trust it because they are true to their words. The Finns that I do know have taken me to some of the most beautiful nature spots in Finland, usually situated around a lake.We have shared our sorrows, anger and joys.To me, this is what Finland and living abroad in Finland is all about. The essence of a country I believe can only be gotten from the local people and getting to know them.
Traveling abroad for the love of a women turned out good for me.I now have many good Finnish people as friends and a whole new lifestyle.I learnt to follow my instincts and as a result Finland in now my home country.Living abroad has opened my eyes and enriched my heart and life.I do not really think anymore in terms of being a British Expatriate,as of being A British Person who is living abroad
