Some one said to me the other day,”Are you going on holiday this summer?!”I had to think about that for a while before I answered. As I see it,I am fortunate enough to already be abroad,as a British Expatriate.I guess it`s the way one looks at life.I choose to live in Finland, which I can take as my home country,or I can at times choose to be a just a resident of the country and no one has to know how long I have lived here, in Finland
I can say to myself and others,”I am already on holiday!”.Anyway this diverts from the origininal question,”Are you going on holiday this summer?”.The answer is yes,but I do not see the reason to leave Helsinki yet. The city is nearly empty of traffic and people. You see most Finnish people have already made haste and gone to their country cottages. This gives Helsinki a very slow, relaxed appearance to those that remain in the city and for those visiting from abroad.
There are very few people in the suburben shops, the parks are deserted of people and city life takes on an all together different lifestyle. Why would I wish to travel anywhere abroad. We are planning to visit our country place, but only when the Helsinki-ites return to their city dwellings.
If you yourself are visiting Helsinki, there are many things to do for all the family.Helsinki itself is filled with many attractions, from enjoying a Finnish Sauna to visiting one of the many Museums situated in and around the City Center. There are many summer cruises that depart daily from downtown Helsinki and give a good idea as to the size of The Finnish Archipelago. You can even dine on some boats, getting a chance to indulge yourself in a seisovapöytä(Scandinavian Buffet). If you are only here for a short time, good places of interest to visit, include
- Suonenlinna Fortress.A regular ferry boat service from Kauppatori(Bottom of Esplanade)
- Mannerheim Museum
- The Seurasaari Open Air Museom
- The home of Jean Sibelius
Activities for young children
There are many fun and interesting things for children to do whilst in Helsinki. It is advisable for visitors to obtain a Helsinki card for young people, which entitles the holder to free or reduced admission to many attractions. The list below may be useful:
- Helsinki Zoo
- Taditional Helsinki by Sea Boat Trips
- Ehrensvärd museum,with a model ship collection
- Linnanmäki Amusement Park
- he Veikko Submarine on Suusisari Island
These are just a few of the many attractions on offer within Helsinki. There are many parks throughout the city, where it is pleasent and relaxing to just have a picnic.Again this time of year,July/August,you will find most parks to be quiet.Information on the above listed attractionscan be got from Visithelsinki.fi
With that,I hope you have a pleasant time travelling and exploring in Finland. As for me,I shall be heading to the Russian border town of Lappeenranta and enjoying my Summer Holiday in the garden and Sauna.
Hoping you have an enjoyable holiday.wherever you go!lol,Greg
