The Winter Snow in Finland
This Winter in Finland has bought us huge amounts of Winter Snow.I just believed it was never going to end or disappear.Outside where I live in Helsinki, the mountains of winter snow look on me ominously.
Last winter was much the same with the city of Helsinki having to lorry load the snow to Vantaa in the north of Helsinki.Winter Snow can be nice to look at as it covers the drab grey buildings. The snow also gives the impression of cleanliness to the rotting nature. We came out of the –20 degree Celsius zone some two weeks ago.Now the sky and air is more bearable to venture out in to.-Temperatures at present are around –1 degree Celsius.I can certainly understand why most ,large animals hibernate in winter. It pretty much applies to the Finnish people as well.A<s soon as the winter snow and ice arrives, people tend to only go out for essential shopping
The Hazards of Winter Snow
The obvious hazard is slipping on the underlying ice. With my very poor vision as a result of Multiple Sclerosis. The body sees myelin as a threat or enemy and so attacks it stripping my optic nerve system. This in turn sends garbled messages to my brain.Hence poor vision.Added to this is a complete lack of balance ,so wandering around in a winter snow is difficult to say the least. There e is some research going on at the myelin repair foundation.Though I believe that is some time in the coming
We have also had problems starting the car in so cold a temperature. This has forced us to all ways keep a spare battery on charge.I remember when as a child the sheer joy when the winter snow came and we could indulge in building snowmen and snowball fights.
With the coming of the Finnish winter snow comes for me the awkwardness of navigating streets and even pathways.I can only make out the contrast in colours. So when everything is a winter snow white I can not make out steps, drops or hills. This has led to many painful falls and slips. The amount of times that some one has mentioned that my lower back is badly bruised. The last fall took me 3 weeks to get over.I can confidently say that I do not like the Winter Snow!’’I intend looking for a cheap holiday some where warmer
Winter Snow Brings Helping Hands
I had 2 white canes to let by passers know that I am visually impaired but they got lost or left someplace. So that is my next purchase. The benefit for me and other blind people is that cars keep their distance, the public is aware of my condition and bus drivers in Finland must stop at the bus stop, open the door and call out the bus number.I need only get on should it be the correct bus.The public have been fantastic. On several occasions I have been escorted across busy roads, through shopping centres but not yet to the toilet.Still cannot hitch-hike successfully in Finland;blind or not!.Time to consider taking a cheap holiday
Well we are coming to the end of yet another winter snow episode.Roll on spring and summer get rid of winter snow
