Get The Right Sauna Heaters
In the early days of the Finnish Sauna, the sauna room did not have a separate washroom,so the inside dimensions of the Sauna room were larger as a result. The main improvement with the Finnish Sauna came with the introduction of a separate washroom.Another improvement were the Sauna heaters itself. As mentioned early saunas were smoke saunas which did not need a chimney
Sauna Heaters,an overview
The older Sauna Heaters models were in fact larger wood heated stoves, that were fired up once and took much longer to reach full temperature.Though we get steam when throwing water on the hot rocks,we cannot call the room a steam room, this is because the real humidity is quite low. Also in the Finnish Sauna, the purpose of throwing water on to the rocks in the sauna heaters is not to create a steam effect and environment with in the Sauna, but rather to gain the transitory effects on the body and so gain quick hot flashes of heat, resulting in the opening of the skins pores and a longer lasting feeling of well-being.Today people use factory made Sauna heaters for ease of use and they save space
Recent innovation in Sauna Heaters
Modern Sauna Heaters today are of a type that store heat in an insulated container that can then be opened for an instant Sauna. All one needs to do is add water(Saunatonttu)
The oldest Sauna Heaters manufacturer.Kastor has now been bought by the Swedish company Tylö
In terms of construction, many Finnish People believe that a good sauna should be constructed of of wooden logs.Finnish manufactures offer complete kits which are prefabricated log saunas. The customer can choose either hand-hewn,planed or turned logs.these kits can then easily be set up near a supply of fresh water or better still near a lake.Finnish Saunas are generally panelled with spruce or knotless pine.Careful attention should be paid to the interior dimensions of the Sauna Room, placement of the benches and how high they are to the floor and Kiuas or Sauna heaters. For optimal performance and effect the upper stones should be lower than the benches
Sauna stones
For the sauna,Natural stones, with a diameter of no less than 35 millimetres should be used, some people use broken stones but hard sea-stones or river-bed stones are seen to be the best. The stones should be igneous not sedimentary. It is a good practice to change the stones every 1-2 years,as they may crumble which is not good.
On a concrete floor one should place nonslip wooden gratings which can be easily removed for cleaning.Finnish Sauna engineers claim that the wood and panelling in the sauna should never be varnished or pained under any circumstances. The wood must be allowed to breathe. The only surface which can be treated is the sauna floor and this with a mold prevention agent. One should not wear anything in the sauna. After a sauna, the benches should be scrubbed clean so removing bodily sweat and dirt.Good ventilation is a necessity for a really clean sauna.
Next week I look at the ventilation for The Sauna which is as important as the Sauna Heaters
