In simple terms a Sauna is a dry-heat sweat bath and for Finnish People forms the basis of most alternative health therapies as well as Hydrotherapies in and around the world today.Almost all health clubs, fitness gyms and hotels offer some form of sauna room for their guests and patrons.
Finnish Sauna and Turkish Bath
There is a on the face of it many similarities between the Finnish Sauna and Turkish Bath, both involve heat, water, relaxation and cleansing of the skins pores. There is a major difference between the two forms of bathing. The Turkish Bath relies and is based on hot,wet steam whereas the Finnish Sauna relies on drier heat. When visiting a Finnish Sauna the heat should optimally be kept at a steady temperature and at a temperature is comfortable to breathe in and feel relaxed with. The other main point to look at is the relative humidity in the sauna room. Many people aim for 20-30% however after living with the Finnish People;many Finns keep their saunas at a humidity level of 40-45%
I have posted previously on the Finnish Sauna customs and sauna history. This page is being included as I believe the Finnish Sauna if used correctly can be beneficial to a persons health and sense of well being.Taking a sauna with the use of essential oils can not only make the accrual sauna experience a better one but is believed by many holistic practitioners worldwide to relieve aches and pains, depression, skin rashes and nerve pains.
Essential Oils for The Finnish Sauna
As a sufferer from Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis I feel and can attest to the benefits of using the sauna with cool water submersions or quick cold showers. This has actually had a positive effect on my central nervous system not to mention the invigorating feeling that it leaves me with.I really cannot speak for the effects against depression as I never really felt any.
There is evidence that some essential oils have remarkable positive health benefits to all,if not most people.Below are listed a few that I use and have found to ease my life
- Birch Essential Oil: Birch Oil is used by many Famish People and is used not only for a pleasant aroma in a sauna room but is used as a counter irritant for pain relief, especially nerve pain, arthritis and joint problems. It also helps reduce inflammation
- Tea Tree Essential Oil;The astounding qualities of Tea Tree Oil were used by the aborigines of Australia for thousands of years. It is known to have powerful germicidal and antiseptic qualities
- Pine Needle Essential Oil;Pine Needle was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans and helps in treating repertory problems and muscular aches. It also promotes a healthy immune system
Purpose of The Sauna
Above are a few oils that I have found to improve or slow the deterioration of my own health. The main purpose of having a sauna should be to help with the elimination of wastes and relaxation;what essential oils you choose to use with your sauna should ultimately be your choice

My dad has always been into this sauna baths. At first, I’ve thought of it as very silly. But when he let me try it, I got really interested with it. It was quite unbelievable but it felt very relaxing. Since I’ve been busy with my dissertation that time, I’ve realized that it was the only thing that I’ve ever needed in order to cope up with my stress. I’m going back again for another session of Finnish sauna.
Thanks Howard.
You can quite easily insatall a sauna in a spare room of the house and yes the Finnish Sauna is invigorating and lifts ther spririts.Opens the skins pores and expels all the rubbish leaving one relaxed and fresh

I’ve always been a great fan of Finnish Sauna. I really like their method since they use drier heat unlike the conventional sauna baths which usually rely on steam. I always have my sauna bath session whenever I feel really stressed or whenever I just want to relax. It really gives me a better feeling. I’ve been recommending all of my friends to try Finnish Sauna. I really hope that they’ll appreciate it the way I do.
Thankyou Benedict,
I am sure that the Finnish Sauna once tried will get enough people to follow taking a sauna more often.
Good on you to encourage your freinds to come with you
Once they try they will see and feel the meaning of the sauna for health and relaxation.Remember to try dropping an essential oil like Birch Tree oil int the water tat you douse the hot stones with.
Added aroma therapy

They say that sauna baths provide so many health benefits. At first, I was very cynical about this. But when my mom tried it for few times, she told me that she really felt much better. Next Friday, we’re going out together to try a Finnish Sauna and I just couldn’t get more excited.
I ma sure you will enjoy.Relax and take your time.Visit the showere/sauna7Shower several times on your visit and relax.I am sure you will enjoy it and want to go back for more.
Importantly drink plenty of water as the body sweats it all out and the bad intoxicants from the skin
Truthfully you get the feeling of being a fresh new born baby
Best Regards

At first, I’m quite scared to try these sauna baths. But when my sister-in-law took me out for a sauna bath experience, I could say that I really liked it. I didn’t expect that it would give me such a peaceful feeling. Now, I just keep on trying different kinds of sauna baths. It was a great thing that I’ve found your blog. This weekend, I’m going to try Finnish Sauna since it feels like very soothing and relaxing. All thanks to you!

Most of my friends aren’t really a fan of these sauna baths. But when I brought them to a Finnish sauna bath, they all liked the experience. They’ve all told me that it was very relaxing and very soothing. They all had a great experience. Now, they are all planning to go back there again.
I’ve always thought that sauna baths were just for the oldies. However, the trend nowadays is just really different. People of all ages come to sauna baths in order to relax and to forget all the hustle and bustle of the city life even if it’s just for a short period of time. Since my mom is a great fan of these sauna baths, I’m going with her on her next session in a Finnish Sauna bath. Well, I’m quite expecting a lot since I’ve been hearing good things about this.
I have to agree with you. Finnish Sauna is the best. The first time I’ve tried it, I fell in love with it right away. It’s just really soothing. And when I’ve found out that it offers so mane benefits to an individual, I even recommended it to my family and friends. It’s just one of those things that you really have to try since it differs so much from the usual sauna experiences.
I’m a fan of sauna baths ever since the first time I’ve tried it because it gives me a certain relaxation that I really need. However, I haven’t tried Finnish Sauna yet. But after reading your post, I’m quite curious since it provides so many health benefits. Thanks so much for the information!
