Having a sauna is something completely natural to Finnish people. If this will be your first visit to a Sauna it may a good idea to share the Experience with a Finn.
With 5.6 million inhabitants,Finland estimates to have approx 1.6 million saunas .So there is really no excuse for not going to one!In Finland(Suomi)men, women and children from an early age bathe in the Sauna.so it is something only natural for Finns.Medical reasons excused! There is no etiquette for bathing and no education is required. It is polite in this country;that if a host pre-heats the Sauna for his/her guests, that they visit the steam room and participate:Medical reasons excused.
In Finland, both men and women bathe in the sauna, but never together except within the family. There are no mixed public saunas in Finland.
So what to expect.
Important to remember is;everyone has his or her own way to take a Sauna. There are no right or wrong ways.Every one has their own preferences.A good rule is to be aware of your own body rhythm.Take it easy when moving around the saunaroom. You may wish to sauna and shower off. What we usually do in summer,is to then sit in the garden and drink beer/wine.The whole experience may last for 30 minutes or go on for the entire evening.Whilst actually I the sauna you may find it pleasant to slap your back with a gathering of Birch leaves. This is not only of therapuetic value,it gives a nice aroma to surroundings.
Again the Sauna is not a place to hurry; If it gets to hot kindly walk out for a break, and ensure you are drinking plenty of liquid. It is common when having a sauna wth frieinds of family,to carry on the conversation, with drinks and maybe a buffet or Dinner.I have spent many a night talking, laughing and periodically visiting the sauna. After 20 years living here,I would truly miss it,were it to go.This is my understanding of what the Sauna Culture is.
