Finnish people, nature and Their Country Cottages

by BARR GREGORY on May 11, 2009

Finnish People I noticed, look for peace and quiet  in the summer holidays. They are more inclined than are Americans or British to choose the Serenity of a country cottage by the lake, and give up the luxury of material things.Finnish People choose to go back to basic living.A closeness with nature and yourself if you like.

Where do the Finns go?

Finland can seem at first glance to be a dull place if visiting in July.Helsinki itself can appear to be a Ghost town at this time of year.I learned early on that most Finns take a five-week summer vacation, and that many of them disappear, like ants fleeing the nest hill. Most spend  the entire time in  small, wooden country  cottages in the woods,or by the Lakes

.There is no rush to this exercise. With in 1 year, I took up the  invitation to visit one of these secluded cabins in 1989. They are meticulously cared for bu their Finnish owners and to most modern day folk lack any creature comforts. I realized that there was not a lot to do and very few people to see.

After three or four days at the country cottage I had been converted. It was extremely  relaxing, and I realized the Finnish  were on to something – a form of luxury that had little to do with high-end gadgets and modern appliances; the quest to acquire them, or the need to show them off. While some Finns goal in life is to accumulate the material trappings of success, most seem to feel that the pleasures of time and solitude are more precious. The days would slowly pass searching for fresh forrest mushrooms and berries, which would later be used in that evenings dinner.

Slowly tendering the land and garden, would occupy me for several hours of the day.I have always been an active person. So I enjoy being in the garden,at one with nature so to speak.”There is no rush”:That was pointed out too me on several occasions.Time seems to slow down.We have food, drink and the Sauna. Not too far a casual walk, is the lake(Lake Saima). Here we can fish and swim.Great on hotter days.At times we only see one car a week. However it is a close drive to the nearest town, should we need to purchase provisions or alternatively decide to eat out.

After having visited several of these country cottages,we decided to buy our own in Lappeenranta

Lappeenranta,on Lake Saima

.East Finland. We visit the place every summer,it is a small country cottage and it truly is a paradise. There is Lake Saima not to far away. After spending the winter in Helsinki itself, the more rural simplistic living is more than a breathe of fresh air.Its a luxury and brings home to most, the meaning of living a simple life. For me personally, it is a time where I can be with myself and wife and not feel compelled to do  anything I do not wish to do.I call that Freedom to be!
