Well I have had my first hick-up with being blind.I was out in Helsinki,Finland the other day and decided I would stop in a local Finnish Lunch place, serving a traditional Finnish buffet table.I sat at a table, placing my white cane next to me,so as not to disturb other eaters
The feeling of being independent
I proceeded to move to the lunch buffet table. This was easy as I chose a table 3 meters away from the buffet. This was my first trauma episode for the day.It took me nearly 20 minutes to choose and place the chosen food on to a plate. It was much like picking up peas with a small pair of tweezers.Eventually I got my portion of lunch, black rye bread and a large glass, which as it turned out was only half full of orange juice
Any way, I proceeded to eat and drink what I had gathered. It is one of the wonderful things about Finnish Buffets;there is a vast array and choice of meats, fish, salads and any thing else you could care to mention. The other thing being, you know it is all ways fresh. If you do visit Helsinki,Finland,or any where for that matter in Finland,I recommend these lunch or evening Finnish buffet venues
After sorting the huger pains out,I then traversed to the fresh coffee table, which was close by,however the place was filling up quickly with various workers and sundry coming in for their own lunches
Things started going wrong
It again took me about 10 minutes and the dropping of two cups.this was due to filling the cups to the top and spilling the hot coffee on my hand. This is something I really have to get used to:Half fill the cup!Eventually I got back to my table and slowly drank my coffee.Bear in mind I can not see much around me.Then it came time to settle the bill and head for home. The waiter(Tarljoilija) came and took my money and I was set to leave.I stood up and put my jacket and coat on,feeling around for my white cane which I had placed next to me only 1 hour ago.
Feeling around me,I had no luck.So I bent down to the floor and began feeling around. This gave no results. Now I was beginning to get edgy and quietly irritated.I headed in the direction of the waiter and found him to be more than helpful.I exp0lained that I was blind and that I had placed my white cane next to where I had been eating lunch. He kindly said that he would scout around the area for me.He then disappeared in the direction of my table and returned after what seemed an eternity.Unfortunately he returned with out finding the white cane.
So I had the white cane for six weeks and I have lost it.It will no doubt cost me to replace it.But the point that is really annoying me inside is what and why can any one do with a stolen White Cane, apart from pretend to be blind. The Finnish Buffet was good, but not that good looking back on it
