The Finland Rally is known as the largest organized event that is held annually in the Nordic countries gathering fans of the sport of over a half of a million spectators each year. This event has a spectacular high speed jump, the most famous being the Ouninpohja. It is the competitive section of the rally where a driver must try to cover a certain stretch of a road that is closed off, in the shortest time possible. This part of the event was largely known to be quite difficult for non-Nordic drivers who also came to be part of this amazing event. It was reported tha only four drivers who were known to be from outside of Finland and Sweden to ever win the rally, which was considered to be an amazing accomplishment, considering these drivers were not as used to the event as many other drivers were.
Neste Oil Rally Special S tages
Each of these special stages of The Neste Oil Rally, as they are called, are of a short distance, which is usually about 30 miles in length. The rallies have about 15-30 special stages and any driver who has the lowest time combined in regard to all the stages, is the winner. All of the roads that are used for the special stages will vary from rally to rally. Some are the Asphalt mountain pass which is mostly used for the Monte Carlo Rally and the rough Forrest tracks which are generally used for the Rally GB. Also there are roads where the surfaces are of snow, ice and dessert sand. These roads are considered to be very common, as the roads will become the challenge the drivers will have to come face to face with along with the crews and the reliability and performance of each drivers car.performing in The Neste Oil Rally
Should drivers be competing on a certain stage in the Neste Oil Rally they can not have any support from their teams and are excepted to deal with any and all problems or break downs.
Each rally driver before the start are given a specific time to begin for the stage along with a five minute interval. And in the few minutes before they begin the cars must sit stationary at the starting point until he is scheduled to begin. There are two sets of markers at the end of each stage for the drivers. The first is known as the flying finish, which is the point of the end of the stage. About 700 meters along the stage is where the stop control point is located. This is where the car will come to a complete halt which then the officials will attempt to record the time. About 50 meters from where the drivers are to stop is the stop point where the stage will end the restrictions of the special stages. This rally began in 1951 where it was first known as a national competition until 1959. It was then considered to be the European Rally Championship until the introduction for the World Rally Championship in 1973, which was known as the WRC of Finland. In 1994 the rally was renamed when the sponsor Neste Oil became the Official Sponsor. From that point the rally was called,Nest Oil Rally of Finland.
Neste Oil Rally Ouninpohja Jump
Ouninpohja is known as the most famous stages of the WRC(World Rally Championship) . It is so well known for the high speed, blind crest, sweeping corners and big jumps. There was one famous jump,6 kilometers from the start line and was close to a land mark yellow house, it was the spectators who measured the jump and marked the distance near the road side.
In 2003 a new record was set Markku Martin for the longest jump ever, the traveling distance for this jump was measured at 57 meters while in the air from a speed of 171 kilometers per hour. Then in 2005 a record was again set at 58 meters, where the car was a Mitsubishi Lancer,Driven by Galli Golo. With out saying they were spactacular jumps
The roads are quite difficult and extremely dangerous and as most drivers claimed, it is the passion that gets them past the danger. It took many years for the drivers to learn the stage. To handle this, as it was said by some drivers, takes a lot of courage and you must be clever too.
Later, in the years of 2005 and 2006, the Ouninpohja stage was then split into two parts for the event. The rule was changed again as Ouninpohja was brought back in 2007 with a 33 km version. But in 2008 there was only a a small part of the stage that was used and then in the year of 2009 this stage was completely taken out of the Neste Oil Rally
The manager of the rally and organizer AKK said that there was talk among the FIA the year before and at that time they were able to allow that part of the stage to remain in the rally, but because of the safety reasons for drivers and spectators behind it, this time is was removed.
This type of sport is and always will remain a firm favorite of all Finish people. The Nests Oil Finland Rally will go down as one of the greatest and magnificent sporting event on the face of the earth. And each year as many more drivers from Finland and other countries compete in the Neste Oil Rally,so will come the fans by the thousands to watch the most exciting sport ever to be in existence.
