The Multiracial community in Finland has grown significantly over the last 20 years. When I came here first in 1988,Finland was a non EU Member.Sure I would see the odd small gathering of Foreigners.Usually in the few British pub like bars. The Immigrant population now stands at2%
Compared to the UK,I cannot give figures as there is a constant flux in the amount of illegal/legal foreigners, suffice to say that an article predicted that some 40% of the British population will have blood from another coutry by 2013
I am pro welcoming foreigner mmigrants to Finland and believe it to be a positive step forward, there is also a fairly large multinational section of the Finnish society.I see an injection of foreign customs, cuisine and traditions can only enrich the local communities.I have yet to find a Genuine Indian take-away or Restaurant. This I was informed politely of,was due to the Restaurants that are presently established in Helsinki, are in fact Nepalese.
I as a young person was bought up in Birmingham,UK.Which along with Leicester is home to some of the best curry houses in England. To this day I still have sweaty dreams of visiting my local Jolly,Jolly.I enjoy eating local foods when abroad,so why don`t we open our arms to peoples from other countries..I beleive firmly;that it can only broaden the horizons of the Finnish People and add some spice to the already strong culture and cuisine. Not to mention the work skills moving peoples bring with them.
There are a myriad of benefits of living in ANY multicultural society amongst foreigner peoples
We get to learn about other customs and cultures. We get the opportunity to taste different foods and cuisine. We learn to share with a diverse range of people so that we can come to understand that people are people. There is good and bad in all races. It is the person him/her self that decides what they hold as dear.
We begin to realise that other cultures have very solid value systems on which they base their lifes. As a direct consequence of that ,we learn to be more tolerant of others Strange as it may sound, we come to realise that most people, do hold these kind of beliefs in one form or another, what ever country in the World they come originate from.
The vast amount of people at their core are basically good, whether they are adhering to their own cultures rules or not.
It is not necessarily about following the rules, it is our inner sense of right and wrong that is quite universal when you strip everything else away.
In the name of moral laws, society imposes rules,to keep some sort of control and peace. and yet, many of those who live in that society do not actually play by the rules. So, we are all rule breakers to some degree.
What is accepted in one society is looked down on from other societies.
This is ALL valuable learning and gives us opportunity to open our minds, and grow into more understanding human beings and learn more about others:If we choose to observe and listen.
These are my own views of having lived in a Multi-Cultural Society.I hope if anything it gives you something to think about.Finland will not lose it`s Identity from allowing other foreigners to come here,As the saying goes”To keep something you have to be willing to give it away.I am happy to live in a multicultural and multiracial country
