Essence of The Finnish Sauna and People, part3

by BARR GREGORY on September 13, 2009

Discovering Finland,Land of a Thousand Lakes & The All Night Sun,would not be complete with out experiencing The Finnish Sauna. For The Finnish People it is an integral pert of their daily Lifestyle.

The Sauna is generally considered to be invented by ,The Finnish People, however The Finns do not wish to claim all the credit, just that what is due!The crucial point here,is who has taken the sauna and developed it to its current high standards and incorporated it in to their culture. No other country can claim that, not even other Scandinavian Countries,Sweden,Norway and Iceland.

The Finnish Sauna

There are three things, apart from The Finnish Language, that singles out The Finnish Sauna from other Scandinavian Countries; The Sauna,Sisu(a trait that all Finnish People hold, likened to an internal tenacity, never give up)and The Tango.Today when a person thinks of Finland;he will undoubtedly think of snow,Nokia,Santa Claus and The Finnish Sauna. If you have ever visited Finland or know some Finns you may also be aware of some of the associated customs and traditions of cooling off with a swim in a nearby lake, ice swimming or rolling around in the snow immediately after exiting the hot Sauna.Nudity is part of the whole Sauna experience and has nothing what so ever to do with sex.

Finnish People used the sauna to combat the realities of living in a harsh climate and as part of a deep social tradition. There are also benefits, physical, mental and even spiritual to be gained by using The Sauna.Sweden and Russia, both tried to highjack the credit for discovering the sauna, but this honour truly belongs to The Finnish People who are masters of the sauna culture today both in terms of development and customs.Has any one heard  of French Sushi orAmerican Ouzo?Of course not!The same applies to the sauna. There is neither a Swedish Sauna or Russian Sauna. When the Swedes market The a,as tey do all over the world, they market it as The Finnish Sauna.I believe, Finland were just not quick enough to penetrate the marketing opportunities that the sauna offered. This does not change the fact however, that the sauna is a Finnish custom that dates back thousands of years. The Finnish Peoplehave a unque bnd with nature.

Up until the 1850`s most Finnish People lived in the country. As a result most Finn`s learnt to survive by using what was aviable in the nure surrounding them.So it is only evolution that some of the best sauna`s were created in Finland.Should you visit Northern Finland, you will find, thathe radional Wood Heated Sauna is used by many people and if you get the chance,it is well worth tryingThe vast majority of Finn I know and have met over the years, seem to feel more at home in The Sauna than in their own apartments or houses. The sauna does have certain unspoken rules that all Finnish People are bought up with.Shouting, screaming, swearing and Tom-Foolery are strictly forbidden and any one who dares to infringe on these rules is made to stay outside till calmed down.As I have heard said”Go shout to the forest”The sauna is a meant to be a spiritual and peaceful place, where every one has the right to be and indulge in a little introspection.

The Sauna experience is something very difficult to explain in words. The discarding of all clothes, which to many represents their front to the world, reduces all to a common denominator:Themselves. If you can imagine a beautiful lake, forest, silence, the elements, you and the universe, you will be a little closer to understanding The Finnish Sauna and People
