in British Expatriate,Finland,Finnish People,Travels

An off topic Blog post but I am sure will ring a bell for all of us born between 1930-1970.Finnish People think the same way by the way.I am of course referring to the modern Tech age that youngsters are currently living in.I leave it for you to make up your own mind, but for me in Finland as a British Expatriate I know that I preferred the old days of the past.

The Good old Days that made us real people

Firstly we survived being born to our Mothers who many smoked, drank and ate fatty foods,we then were welcomed in houses made from chipboard and asbestos

Our parents took pills like aspirin, ate processed meat(spam),served vegetables drowning in water, custard with every pudding like spotty dick and our mothers did not get tested for things like cervical cancer or diabetes.Attention Deficit Disorder was unheard of.

Then after the trauma of being born we were put to rest in cots coated in lead based paint.Pill bottles had no child proof caps, neither cabinets nor cupboards. Our toys were simply made to understand and the fun was in putting them together. If we were fortunate enough to receive a new bike,we had no helmets, knee guards and hitchhiking was a pleasure unto itself any way

We as children would drink water from streams, the tap, garden hose and not from a French Bottle. The shops closed at 1800 and were not open on weekends. But spam always cane to the rescue.take a ways consisted of Fish & Chips, there was no McDonalds,KFC OR Pizza outlets. With our friends we carefully shared one bottle of soft drink and no one contracted Hepatitis or Aids

We were to busy as children to become overweight

We went to school and played all day, after on building sites,in forests,by a stream or on a wrecked car.We would spend days building our go carts from the bits we found on our wanderings.as long as we were back home before the sun set.No one was able to contact us for those times we were out playing as their were no mobile phones and that was Great!gokartparts1 150x150 Childhood memories of an Expatriate Kid

We had no computers or Nintendo,no play stations, video or DVD players. What we did have though was Friends and we would be outside playing with them.We got cut and bruised, fell out of trees even broke a tooth or two.No lawsuits would result from these accidents!

We were given a penknife on our 11th birthday, may be an air pistol on our 14th.At Easter time we were only allowed Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns.We had to survive on our weekly pocket money or supplement it by cutting the neighbours grass or washing the car.Cars had no seat belts or pop up air bags.

We played Football,Rugby and Cricket at school and each had their own try outs, this would be the first and biggest disappointment for many, but we learnt to deal with it.Mothers did not have to go to work to support the family income,we grew our vegetables in the back garden.,apples & pears to.Forest floors used to be covered with a candescent  blue of Blue Bells. We ate tadpoles and mud pies made from clay.

At school our teachers hit us with gym shoes, canes and whack us across the back of our heads with a book.Yet the Bullies seemed to all ways rule the playground.

Finally our parents actually sided with the law, standing up for us if we broke the law was just not a done thing. Our patents did not give us stage names like Butch,Blade,Tyler and girls with men’s names

Conclusion

As I see it this Blog post is for Finnish People,British People,American People and most people throughout the world will have there fond memories of childhood from 1930-1970.My Blog post realises one important thing and that is we all had freedom, failure, successes, and gained a lot of responsibility. Most importantly we learnt to deal with what we had.If you are one of those people! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
