The Baltic Sea and Helsinki

In a far corner of the Baltic Sea is Finland and on the Southern Coast is Finland`s Capitol,Helsinki.Helsinki serves as the point of arrival for many travelers to Finland.Whether tourists arrive by plane at Helsinki Vantaa Airport or by ship to the Helsinki downtown market area. Many new visitors to Helsinki do not really venture to explore the tranquil surroundings that the larger part of Finland has to offer. To many wishing to travel further inland the easiest way by far is to rent a car or travel by the excellent rail network that Finland has kept running like clock-work.If you are destined to be confined to the City of Helsinki,do not frustrate as there is plenty on offer in Helsinki, especially during the summer months
As Helsinki is a relatively small city compared to the likes of London ,New York and Paris,it is very straightforward to navigate and get around. There is an superb tram system that has been organized with thought for workers and tourists alike. There is also a  metro line, sorry one only, however it gets you to many varying places of interest. The most enjoyable way to experience Helsinki is to hire a bike. The pavements all have special bicycle lanes which are marked clearly and cover the greater part of Helsinki.A bicycle allows you unrestricted freedom, access to beaches and places of interest, some good exercise and the chance to see the lifestyle of the Finns.

Helsinki Shopping on The Baltic Sea

Many people are content to stay with in the centre of Helsinki, shop for Finnish Arts and crafts. The best known street to find these sorts of trophies has got to be Annankatu.I spend hours browsing the book shops, art shops and craft centers:I even found on my browsing a first edition of””Tales of Ordinary Madness”by Charles Bukovski. There is also some excellent artwork by Finnish Artists that you can find for reasonable prices.Visitors who are looking for modern presents to buy, need look no further than the Stockman’s store in Aleksanterinkatu/Mannerheimtie.Stockman`s is one of the largest department stores based in Helsinki. They offer a good selection of clothing, expensive and inexpensive, household utensils and just about anything you are searching for.

For those looking to obtain the latest Nokia phones has to offer, there is the Nokia Flagship store on Aleksanterinkatu 46.Whenever I visit to tease myself,I am convinced that many visitors to Helsinki come for the purpose of seeing the latest innovations Nokia is and will be offering in the not to far future. All Nokia products are on display and if not in a rush you may find yourself engrossed trying out all the latest models

Baltic Sea abnd Helsinki from a Higher Elevation

Shopping is not my forte especially in the heat of Finland summer. So why not take an elevator for a panoramic view of the city and the surroundings.Head to the Olympic Stadium on the 3T tram and get in the escalator in the Olympic Tower. The views are great.Or walk over to the Hotel Torni and again jet up to the top floor.By the way the toilet is made of glass so you can see most of Helsinki center, but no one can see you for the height.Cool huh!.There is also an excellent wine bar on the top floor,Ateljee Bar.There is also a highly recommended restaurant at the entrance to Torni..For those who don’t mind paying for good cuisine and wines, this is a must restaurant to visit

For those looking for a higher vantage point you can try to get in a hot air balloon trip.I see them drifting over occasionally and this really has to be the ultimate way to view the whole of Helsinki and the surrounding Finnish Countryside.Contact the below organizers

  • Balloons Helsinki Oy
  • Telephone: +358 (0)9 272 8277 or +358 (0)400 937 778
